Queen Sirikit Park in Thailand

Situated between Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road and Kamphaeng Phet 3 Road, near Chatuchak Weekend Market, Queen Sirikit Park was established on August 12,1992 to commemorate the 60th birthday anniversary of HM the Queen.

The Park covers an area of 200 rai (120,000sq m), and was intended as a plantation following the concept of the diversity of plants in a forest. The park is also designated as one of Thailand's ideal botanical gardens, where more than 2,000 species of local and foreign plants are preserved.

This "Little Forest in a Big City" is nothing short of an oasis of ponds, pavilions, fresh breezes, and gentle birdsong. It is a perfect escape from Bangkok's never-ending bustle, a place for leisurely strolls and photos with friends and loved ones. It is also right next to Chatuchak Park (Suan Chatuchak) and Rotfai Park (Suan Rotfai).

Sirikit Park offers many attractions:
The Winding Pool - This beautiful pool winds through the Park, its shape a combination of an 's' with the Thai letter 'sah seua', the first letter in the Queen's name. The pool is decorated with flowers and three fountains, which entertain visitors three times a day, at 7am, 12pm and 5pm. Come enjoy a relaxing atmosphere together with the movement and the splashing sound of dancing fountains accompanied by light music.

Botanical Gardens - Along the trail, visitors will see various kinds of plants grouped according to their botanical families, such as:

The Banana Garden - Over 70 species are on display.

The Lotus Garden - Geometrically shaped pools are filled with colourful lotuses of many types, both local and foreign. The pools themselves are arranged as petals around a central circular pool. Various kinds of lotuses are planted in ancient jars which rest on granite platforms encircling the garden. The best time to enjoy the lotus garden is in the morning, from 6am to 8am when the lotuses are in bloom.

Visitors will be amazed by the beautiful flowers on display, including the Siam Ruby Lotus - both pink and white varieties - and the Victoria Waterlily, which changes colour according to its life cycle from white, when it is young, to purple at maturity. The landscaped beds along the walkway to the lotus garden are presented in European garden style.

The Hibiscus Yard - Brightly coloured hibiscus are presented.

The Asok Tree Yard - Each kind has different young / newborn branches which look like bunches of blossoms.

The Frangipani Yard - A large yard is filled with different kinds of charming frangipani, located along a canal near a fountain. In late afternoon, the flowers send sweet scent to permeate the garden air.

Along the Trails - Benches are placed under trellis roofs covered by climbing vines, creating deliciously shady spots for relaxation. The most special vine is the rare Yan Da-o or 'Golden Leaf Vine'. It has butterfly-shaped leaves, which are light green when young, and turn deep velvety red-brown when mature. These gorgeous leaves reflect the sunlight in shimmers of gold, giving the plant its name. This plant was found in 1970 by HM the Queen at Bayo Waterfall in a national park in the southern province of Narathiwat. It was brought to the park in 1996. Three years later it first gave golden leaves in Bangkok.

Another special favorite is Yan Lipao, a vine with little light green leaves. The Queen found this plant in a mangrove in Narathiwat. Her insightful projects have encouraged the revival of traditional skills as a means of increasing rural income. For instance, she encourages craftsmanship such as the making of distinctive handbags from Yan Lipao vines.

The Provincial Tree Garden - This garden is in the shape of a map of Thailand. Each province is represented by a tree local to that province.

Building Commemorating HM the Queen's 72 birthday - There are displays of HM the Queen's work and projects concerning the conservation of our natural environment. Names and pictures of interesting plants in the garden are included. Currently the information is only in Thai, but park staffs are working to update it in English.

Three Buildings for Thai plants - Central and West; South and East; North and Northeast.

Trails inside each building are designated for local plants from each region. Lush greenery is scattered with colorful orchids and flowers.

Garden for The Blind - This is the first garden for the sight-impaired in Thailand. Visitors will enjoy nature and acquaint themselves with various species of aromatic plants by sense of touch and smell. The garden is equipped with Braille information signs, iron bars leading visitors along the trails, as well as speakers which automatically give information when visitors pass by.

Other attractions in the Park include Garden of Aromatic Plants and Plants from Thai Literature and Garden of Plants Concerned with the Thai Monarchy.

Queen Sirikit Park is a perfect venue for recreation as well as a learning centre about the flora of Thailand aw well as foreign lands.

Wat Pa LelaiThis is a very old monastery located on the west bank of Suphan River, two kilometers from the bank. It is generally called by the villagers as "Wat Pa". The Vihara houses a Buddha image in the attitude of leading a jungle life named "Luang Pho To". The image, highly revered by the people, was formerly in the attitude of giving the first preaching sermon but was changed to be in the present attitude when it was renovated. Every year there are two worshipping fairs falling on the 5th to the 9th waxing moon days of the 5th and the 12th lunar months.

Wat Sanam Chai An abandoned monastery located at Mu 5 Tamhon Sanam Chai, Amphoe Muang is one kilometer from the bank of the Suphan River to the east. Only ruins of the northern side of a large pagoda are left to be seen. It is estimated that its height should be 70-80 meters if it were in perfect shape. Early in 1962 the Fine Arts Department attempted to rehabilitate the pagoda searching for outstanding archaeological materials. Nothing was found probably because they might have been taken away by smuggling searchers many years ago. Some human relics were found and it was assumed that they should belong to warriors who died on the battle field in ancient times, so the name of "Unknown Warrior Chedi" is given to this pagoda.

Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat This monastery is located in the vicinity of Tambon Rua Yai, Amphoe Muang on the bank of the Suphan River 200-300 meters from the bridge crossing the river. It is locally called Wat Phrathat and is over 600 years old. The main attraction is a large prang housing the Lord Buddha's relics. It was probably built either during the reign of King Ti Thong (A.D.1350-1369) or the reign of King Ramathibodi II (A.D.1424-1448)

Wat Phra Rup This monastery is located on the west bank of the Tha Chin River opposite Suphan Buri provincial market in the vicinity of Amphoe Muang. It is a very old monastery built in the late U Thong era. The main attractions of this monastery are a reclining Buddha called by the villagers "Nen Kaeo" and Buddha's footprint made of wood which is very valuable as it is the only one in existence in Thailand, and is assumed to be the only one in the world.

The Four Sacred Ponds The four ponds named Sa Kaeo, Sa Kha, Sa Yomana, and Sa Ket are located in the vicinity of Amphoe Muang near the Tha Wa River 14 kilometers from the township area. They are assumed to provide sacred water ever since the prosperous U Thong City era; water from these four ponds have been utilized for various coronation ceremonies.

The pagoda was constructed by the royal command of King Naresuan the Great to commemorate his victory against King Maha Uparacha of Burma in single hand elephant back combat. Found in 1913 in mined condition, only the base part can be seen. It was renovated having a new pagoda to cover the original one in the year 1952 by the government. A cast statue of King Naresuan the Great mounting the elephant's neck was placed in front of the pagoda. An annual fair celebrating the monument for seven days and seven nights commences on the 25th of January which is regarded as Royal Thai Armed Forces Day. The celebrations include historic shows, folk entertainment and shops selling all kinds of merchandise and service.

Muang U Thong This city currently located at Amphoe U Thong is a very old town found in the legend of Ayutthaya. King U Thong led a migration of his subjects running away from cholera at U Thong City to establish a new capital at Krung Si Ayutthaya in the year 1347. Later on the search for evidence at U Thong City revealed many factors which indicate that this is an old town and established a long time before Ayutthaya. It had been abandoned for some centuries before King U Thong established Ayutthaya as the capital so it is now believed that King U Thong did not run away from the cholera there as afore mentioned. The main attraction of tI Thong is the U Thong National Museum which stores artifacts and archaeological materials found from excavations, such as, tools, utensils and Buddha images displaying human development in the different ages when those people used to reside in this area of Suphan Buri.

Nakhonpathom : Rose Garden Cultural Show

Rose Garden Cultural Show
Enjoy the unique and unforgettable experience of the world-renowned Thai Village Cultural Show. Daily, over 150 performers vividly portray a fascinating cross-section of Thailand's culture, heritage and way of life -- dances, ceremonies, rituals, sports and pastimes. The 60-minute action-packed show highlights:

Thai Martial Arts:
Thai-style boxing is extremely popular in Thailand. Accompanied by its unique ritual and ceremony, it is an art that demands a high degree of skill and fitness. The boxers dance around with great agility and are permitted to use - elbows, hands, feet, knees. In fact, just about any part of their supple and well-sculpted physique.
Sword fighting, a traditional and historical form of combat for both male and female warriors dates back over 600 years.

Thai Wedding Ceremony:
Witness a traditional Thai wedding ceremony performed according to ancient Thai customs. It is a ceremony of pageantry, humility, joy and splendor with all the friends and relatives of the newlyweds participating.

Ordination Into The Monkhood:
In Thailand, young men usually spend a period of time in the Buddhist Monkhood. To mark a young novice's entry into the monk-hood, the Buat Naag ritual consisting of a traditional procession followed by the ordination ceremony is performed. It is attended by the groom's relatives and close friends who make the event, a colorful, joyful and enjoyable occasion as the young man embarks on a period of study and meditation

The Fingernail Dance:
The Fingernail Dance is a graceful dance which originated from the North of Thailand. It is usually performed as a gesture of greeting and welcome.

Dance From The North East:
A mixture of North Eastern dances which collectively and symbolically express greetings and good luck.

Bamboo Dance:
Another North Thailand dance, which is usually performed during the the full moon. It requires great skill, practice and timing. Even a small slip can be very painful.

Kala Dance:
The Kala Dance comes from the southern part of Thailand. The dance features coconut shells and reflects the importance of coconuts in everyday village life

Yoey Dance:
From the Central Plains of Thailand. This is a dance of flirtation and fun.

Elephants at Work:
As they still do today in the teak forests of Northern Thailand. You will enjoy riding on them.

In addition to the unique and unforgettable

experiences of the Thai Village Cultural Show, experience the typical rural Thai way of life in the Thai village at The Rose Garden Cultural Centre

See villagers at work in a natural setting creating traditional village handicrafts, weaving silk, making pottery, painting umbrellas, making "Khon" masks, weaving mat, making traditional Thai dolls, carving fruit and vegetables, making garlands, threshing rice, and crafting intricate silver and laquerware.

These and many more fascinating aspects of Thai Village life are depicted and we believe you will treasure the memories of your visit for a long time to come.

Bangkok : Corrections Museum

the image

Located on Mahachai Road, the Corrections Museum is the place to learn about the gruesome punishments meted out to offenders in Thailand in the not so distant past. It was once the site of the Bangkok Remand Prison, an old and overcrowded penal facility located in the heart of Bangkok. In 1990, the cabinet relocated it to Lad-yao and turned the site into a public park called Rommani Nart. Three blocks, a cellblock, a side of the prison wall and two watchtowers were preserved, and converted into this Museum of the macabre.

Grisly corporal punishment tools and weapons exhibit the severities of the old penal system, a sadistic system based on retribution through severe punishment and suffering (after seeing these you'll think twice about misbehaving while on these shores). Life-sized wax figures act out with painful precision execution scenes. A grim highlight includes a man-sized rattan ball pierced with nails pointing inwards. Hapless prisoners were placed inside and an elephant used to kick the ball around. Ouch! Less likely to revisit you in your dreams is the area exhibiting furniture and handicrafts made by prisoners from across Thailand - all available to buy. The building also shows how prisoners in the past lived day-to-day, and how prison guards brought offenders into custody.

Opening Hours: 09:30 - 16:00 (Monday - Friday, closed on public holidays)
Location: 436 Mahachai Road, near Rommani Nart Park

Phuket : Kamala Beach

Kamala Beach, Phuket is a Muslim fishing village north of Patong. Tourist development on the beach much of which is covered by a Muslim graveyard and a police outpost has been slow in coming.Buffalo herds still come down to the beach to cool off in the afternoon. The beach is beautiful and about 2 kms. in length. There are accommodation ranging from guesthouse to international class, and a number of small Thai restaurants specializing in seafood for the tourist. Kamala is the perfect place to get away from it all and has a little to offer in the way of entertainment for that go across the mountains to Patong. Regular bus service to and from Phuket Town during daytime; tuk-tuk service available to Patong, 5kms. away on the new road.

Krabi : Nopparat Thara Beach

The beach is known locally as Klong Haeng or 'dry river', a reference to the distance the water retreats at low tide, often so far that you can walk out to the small islands in front of it! Klong Haeng is also the name of the village closest to the beach, some 700m away.

The name Nopparat Thara is that of the local National Park to which most of the beachfront land supposedly belongs; however in the last 2-3 years most of the trees have been felled and hotels and shopping plazas put up in their place. Even the National Park itself is building more bungalows to accommodate the Ao Nang 'overspill' and has also created a large car park and camping ground for the Thai daytrippers and school groups who come to picnic here.

All this activity now means Nopparat justifies a page of its own (although much of the information we provide about neighbouring Ao Nang also applies here).

As befits a place that has been developed higgeldy-piggedly, there is a stark range of accommodation along the recently widened beach road. There is one huge five-star complex in the style of a Thai palace (Ayodhoya Suites - still under construction); several 3-star hotels; a family resort; smart new guesthouses; and a whole host of locally-run budget bungalows, set further back from the beach, along the dirt road to the boxing stadium. As development is on-going, it is possible that you find yourself staying next to a construction site; please check for up-to-date information in our Krabi forum.

Many people who stay here catch a tuk-tuk (20B per person) to Ao Nang to eat and drink, although there are a growing number of decent restaurants and small bars along the centre of the strip near Deang Plaza, as well as around Luna Bar at the corner nearest to Ao Nang and at the far end of the beach near the river.

On the other side of the river the beach continues and it is also possible to stay here, if you are looking for real seclusion - it is only accessible by (irregular) boat - and don't mind the sandflies which can plague sunbathers.

The main beach area is more pleasant and open than Ao Nang, especially now with the new benches, pavilions and off-road walkways along its length. It also attracts more of a mixed crowd, including at the weekend many Thai people, who like to splash about in the shallow water. In general the scene is more 'backpacker' than Ao Nang but also includes those of all ages who want the convenience of staying near Ao Nang (access to tours, transport etc.), without the Ao Nang crowds and prices. Nopparat certainly offers better value for money if you take proximity to a beach as the measure.

Krabi : Shopping

You should also wake up early one morning and visit the colourful local market between Phruksauthit Road and Maharaj Road, where every day the stalls are pilled high with all the fresh produce the sea and countryside around Krabi can produce.
It is a real pleasure to wander among the stalls, sampling the different and often unusual tastes and smells but go early to see all the wares piled at their highest and to feel the manic energy of this place, by 10 O'Clock it has begun to slow down, the day's dealing done.

There are also two popular night markets one on Maharaj Soi 8 just around the corner from Thaimit Tours and the other on the river front at Khongkha Road.

These are the best places to sample many sweet and strange new fruits including the (in)famous Durian or practice your new language skills ordering tasty and cheap Thai dishes, deserts and drinks .

Ao Nang offers many of the same shopping and eating facilities as Krabi though it is perhaps, a little more familiar to tourists.

This resort town has a wide range of shops, many right behind the beach and perfect for those beach essentials that you always seem to have forgotton or just run out of. For more 'serious shopping', about a kilometre out of town, on the way to Haad Nopparattara Beach, is "The Beach Plaza".

This is a modern shopping centre perfect for buying electronics and brand name clothing and toiletries. In fact, every imaginable shopping needs is catered for here under one roof, plus a large choice of eating options from Thai rice and noodles to Western fast food, and everything in between.

Shopping in Krabi for many is an exciting and pleasurable experience. Whether you are shopping for a suit or bargain hunting, looking for that extra special 'something' for someone special back home whatever it is, shopping in Thailand can be fun.
Street vendors often seem to be on every street corner showing you their goods (with a calculator in one hand) from silk scarves, hammocks and sarongs to laser pens etc. If you are interested in any of the wares you find, then it is time to start bargaining, If you are not interested in what is on offer, simply smile and continue on your way.

Antiques Thai, Chinese, Burmese and Khmer antiques are excellent buys. Certain categories of antiques are restricted, particularly Buddha images. Others pieces may require an export license, but any reputable dealer will be able to advise you the appropriate restrictions and necessary documentation.

Gems Throughout Thailand, coloured gemstones such as rubies and sapphires are readily available. Many other varieties of coloured stones can be found here as well.

Clothing Thailand is one of the world's leading manufacturers of ready-to-wear clothing. Fashion boutiques are found in every shopping mall, while cheaper clothing such as T-shirts and jeans are available at bargain prices from street vendors and stores alike. Custom tailoring is also very affordable and tailors can produce most styles promptly. Then of course there are the 'designer label' copies, that frustrate the designers themselves but are a dream come true for many bargain hunters.

Furniture Rattan and rosewood furniture items are available in many designs and styles. They can also be made to order in some shops in Krabi. Arrangements for oversea shipment are often available at the place of purchase.

Nielloware Practiced in southern Thailand for hundreds of years nielloware is the craft of decorating gold and silver objects with delicate etched designs filled with a metal inlay. Nielloware trays, boxes, vases and other items are often strikingly beautiful and because they are created from precious metals can be of great value. They are excellent examples of souvenirs unique to southern Thailand.

Orchids Thailand is famous for its huge variety of orchids. Their magnificent colours and beauty make them a popular purchase. Specially packaged flowers, complete with water supply are readily available for the long journey home and can be conveniently purchased in many locations including the Gift Shops in the international airports.

Pewter ware Pewter is fashioned with great skill by Thai craftsmen, the smooth, silky finish of this attractive alloy is enhanced by delicate decorative relief. Pewter ware items include plates, boxes, vases and pocket flasks and are available in many shops throughout Krabi.

Silk Probably the most famous of all the kingdom's handicrafts, Thai silk is available in a range of colors, patterns and plys. It is sold by the yard or as ready-made clothing and souvenir items. A unique style of Thai silk is Mat Mee, a tie-dye silk traditional to the North-East.

Fossil Shell Beach

Susaan Hoi, or Fossil Shell Beach (literally Seashell Graveyard), is located at Ban Laem Pho in Krabi, in the vicinity of Hat Noppharat Thara - Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. Susaan Hoi is a matter of curiosity and although visitors to Susaan Hoi are told that there exists only two other similar sites in the world, one in US and another in Japan, most are either engrossed to this or totally indifferent.

The age of the fossils at Susaan Hoi is placed as about 40 million years ago. At that time, Susaan Hoi was a large freshwater swamp. Eventually, it became landmass. Over time, successive layers of shell created rock slabs known as "shelly limestone" of over 40cm. These rest on 10 centimetres of lignite, below which was subsoil.
Due to geographic upheaval, this shelly limestone at Susaan Hoi is now distributed in great broken sheets on the seashore at Laem Pho. They look like broken chunks of cement flooring from afar.

Susaan Hoi Site 1
Site 1 is located west of the Visitor Centre. It crops out as a rocky beach and can be clearly seen during maximum low tide. The pan-shaped outcrop is the result of the sinking of the underlying claystone beds. The fossil bed consists of stubby-shaped gastropods (Viviparidae family) ranging in size from 1-2 cm.

Susaan Hoi Site2
Site 2 is located at the Visitor Centre. It is exposed as a 1-2 m thick limestone bed. This limestone bed contains millions of compacted gastropods and is underlain by 20-40 m thick lignite and claystone beds. These beds are easily eroded by wave resulting in the collapse of the gastropod beds.

Susaan Hoi Site 3
This site can be accessed along the track during low tide. Mollusc beds at this site are approximately 3 m thick, consisting of long gastropods and bivalves. The gastropod fossils from this site range in size from the stubby 1-2 cm to the elongated 4-5 cm forms.

the image

Strata of these three sites of Susaan Hoi are interpreted as having been deposited in fresh-water lakes during 35 million years ago. Deposited events are summarized as:

Sediments were accumulated into the basins as clay mixed with plant remains and gastropod fragments. This indicates the presence of plants and animals in the lakes.
Plant remains were then accumulated upon clay layers and became peat and lignite.
In the final stage, clayey sediments were mixed with calcareous components and abundant shell fragements. This is due to huge population of gastropods living in fresh-water lakes. Changes in paleoenvironments and fluctuations of water level resulted in increasing and decreasing numbers of gastropod population as recorded in the fossil beds.
The presence of laterite, laterite soil, river and beach sands overlying mollusc beds indicates that fresh-water lakes became a landmass prior to 200,000 years.

Phu Kradueng Loei

Phu Kradueng is a mesa covering over 160,000 square meters. On top, there are pine trees, plants, and waterfalls. However, the most dramatic sight is a dramatic overhang, protected by a solitary pine tree. This area is important to the people in the area and the serves as symbol of the province.
Location

The Phu Kradueng Summit: Reaching the summit from Phu Kradueng covers about five kilometers and takes between three and four hours. At the top is an expansive mesa where you can take advantage of their accommodations and restaurants. You should spend at least two nights on the mesa to ensure you see all the sights. There are signs posted all over the park, so you should not need a guide to get around.

Basking in the Morning Fog: In the early morning, the valley below becomes engulfed in a thick blanket of fog. As the sun slowly rises, the fog bums off revealing the jungle below.

The Pha Lomsak Viewpoint: On the western side of this cliff, there is a path leading from Pha Mak Duk to Pha Lomsak through the forest made of sand and stone. This is a wonderful place to watch the sunset. However, Pha Lomsak is nine kilometers from the campsite, so you should bring a flashlight.

Waterfalls: In Phu Kradueng there are many waterfalls like Wang Kwang, Phen Phop, Phon Phop, Tham So to be enjoyed during the winter.

How to Get There
